1. The Key Feels Stiff or Requires Force to Turn
This is the most common early warning sign. The internal wafers and pins in the ignition barrel wear down over thousands of uses, creating friction and making the key harder to turn. What starts as a slight stiffness can progress to the key not turning at all. Get it checked before that happens.
2. You Have to Jiggle or Wiggle the Key
If you've developed a 'technique' for turning your key — wiggling it, pulling it out slightly, or holding it at a specific angle — your ignition barrel is worn and on borrowed time. That technique will eventually stop working, usually at the worst possible moment.
3. The Key Gets Stuck and Won't Come Out
A key stuck in the ignition is a clear sign of a mechanical fault — either in the barrel itself or in the electrical release mechanism that frees the key when you shift into Park (on automatics) or turn the engine off. Don't force the key out — you risk breaking it in the ignition.
4. The Steering Wheel Lock Won't Release
If you insert the key, turn it, and the steering wheel remains locked solid, there could be a fault in the steering lock mechanism. Sometimes it's just the wheel resting against the lock — try gently turning the wheel while turning the key. If that doesn't work, you need professional help.
5. The Key Turns But Nothing Happens
You turn the key to the start position and... nothing. No crank, no click, no dashboard lights. This could be the ignition switch (the electrical component behind the barrel) rather than the barrel itself. It could also be a flat battery, so check that first — but if the battery is fine and the key still does nothing, the ignition switch is the likely culprit.
6. Dashboard Lights Flicker or Cut Out When Turning the Key
Intermittent electrical behaviour when you turn the key suggests a failing ignition switch. The switch has multiple electrical contacts for different circuits (accessories, ignition, starter), and as it wears, these contacts can become unreliable.
7. You Hear Clicking But the Engine Doesn't Crank
A rapid clicking sound when you try to start is usually the starter motor solenoid engaging but not having enough power to crank — this is typically a flat battery. But a single click with no cranking could be the ignition switch, the starter motor, or a wiring fault. We can diagnose this on-site.
8. The Ignition Feels 'Gritty' or Rough
A grinding or gritty sensation when inserting or turning the key suggests debris or metal wear particles inside the ignition barrel. Over time, the barrel's internal components wear against each other, producing fine metal particles that act like sandpaper. This accelerates wear and will eventually cause the ignition to seize.
